Troubleshooting for an unsupported file

FCPX says "Unsupported file type". QuickTime, MPEG Streamclip, and some free programs I downloaded couldn't open or fix it either!

Dear Producer,

I was shooting a concert with one of CCTV's JVC HD cameras over this last weekend. I had maybe 90 minutes of video files that looked great. But there is a problem with the very last video file of that day - and it's the best part of the concert!

This file would not open in Final Cut Pro. FCPX would show an error message that said "Unsupported file type". QuickTime, MPEG Streamclip, and a bunch of free programs I downloaded off the web couldn't open or fix it either.

Do you know how I can save this file? I'm going CRAAAZZY!

Thanks,
Mr. Videographer

Hi Mr. Videographer!

This problem occurs when the camera operator does not turn the camera off before removing the battery or the SD cards, and since the trouble is with only the last video file of the day, I am guessing that is what happened. To avoid this problem, make sure the camera is turned off before inserting or removing a card or changing the batteries. Good news is that there is a way to recover your file! Follow the steps below.

  1. Put your card back into the JVC Hd camera.
  2. Go to main menu -->media-->restore media

The camera will take a few seconds to repair your media, and then you should be good to go.
