Veggie Night Out

Veggie Night Out

Explore a world of meatless meals in Cambridge

Everyone knows eating veggies is good for your health and good for the planet. Why not have a meatless Monday and explore these tasty vegetarian dishes around town. My list is not about flavorless mock meat and rubbery fake cheeses. I decided to showcase the best vegetarian international dishes. These dishes are full of spice and flavors, so uniquely presented you will want to try them.

The first one on my list is Muqueca located in Located in Iman square @ 1008 Cambridge MA 02141. Enjoy traditional Brazilian meal stewed in a black clay pot. I had the Vegetarian Bobo, with tofu, tomato, onion, cilantro, yucca cream, coconut milk with a side of collard greens.

The next stop in my veggie dining adventure is The Helmand. This afghan restaurant is located at 143 first, Cambridge Ma 02142. You will be served delicious warm fresh baked flatbread directly out of a clay oven. For an appetizer I ate the Kaddo candy-sweet baby pumpkin. I enjoyed the vegetarian Aushak, an Afghan ravioli filled with leeks and scallions, topped with yellow split peas and carrots sauce.

The last stop on my dinning adventure is Ethiopian food at the Sheger Cafe. Located at 2376 Massachusetts Ave. Cambridge MA. I chose the veggie combo so I can taste a little bit of everything. The food is served on top of a large crepe-like bread. On top of my injera bread were six dishes. Atkilt is a vegetables stew made with carrots, potatoes, cabbage, peppers and onions. Gomen is a collared green or chard. Kik Alcha Wot is split peas cooked in turmeric, garlic, onion and other spices. Misir Key Wot is a lentils dish cooked in red pepper sauce. Misir Alcha Wot, another lentils dish, this time cooked with rurmeric and spices. Finally, there is Fosolia, a green beans and carrots cooked with onions and spice. All are eaten with your hands by scooping them up with a small piece of the injera.
