String Trio of New York’s 40th Anniversary Celebration
For 40 years, the String Trio of New York (S3NY) has been a powerful force on the contemporary music scene. For the 2018/19 season, they are marking their 40thanniversary celebration with an outstanding repertoire of recent compositions and re-imaginations of earlier works – both classic originals and selections from the more than a dozen pieces commissioned from a variety of the most notable composers of the late 20th century.

Formed by three men who cut their teeth on the legendary New York Loft Scene of the early 1970s, guitarist James Emery, bassist John Lindberg and the late violinist Billy Bang co-founded the groundbreaking ensemble amidst New York’s next fertile phase, the Downtown Lower New York scene. Forging the path for the genre-defying Jazz, Western Classical and World Music-informed Chamber discipline that is so prevalent in today’s adventurous musical environment, the S3NY has remained active and thriving over its entire 40-year history.

Featuring Co-founder, Guitarist James Emery,
Violinist Rob Thomas (of Berklee) and
either guest Bassist John Lockwood (subbing for regular Tony Marino)

The Creative Music Series proudly welcomes:
“A virtuosic joy, a paradigm of jazz improvisation and control, a mélange of urban ghetto street cries and high art.”
– The Boston Globe
“…as rhythmically alive, stylistically varied and consistently inventive…” NY Times
“As much as their improvisations appeal to the intellect, they appeal even more to the spirit, and ultimately to the viscera…” St. Louis Post Dispatch
“No individual or ensemble has done more to demystify chamber jazz…’ JazzTimes
Over those years and with only a few changes in personnel – including the award-winning violinist Regina Carter – the ensemble is still led by Mr. Emery with violinist Rob Thomas (at Berklee) and bassist Tony Marino (members for 18 and 8 years respectively), and remains on the cutting edge of the music that it has pioneered.
James Emery has received global recognition for his original approach as a composer / guitarist. A Guggenheim Fellow, Emery has composed over 150 works for a variety of formats including symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, and solo guitar.
Rob Thomas is regarded as one of the most impressive contemporary jazz violinists. His breadth of ideas, stunning technique and total command of the jazz vocabulary inspire all who hear him. JazzTímes calls him “a violinist of exceptional creative resources… riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone that can sing or shriek.”

The Creative Music Series (CMS) was established in January, 2015, to showcase the work of adventurous jazz musicians from out-of-state, presenting them in intimate venues in the Cambridge/Somerville area. My endeavor was a reaction to the apparent lack of invitations being extended to accomplished, new talent and even unknown musicians to the Boston area. CMS has now begun to zero in on Boston based musicians who are creating their own projects with these out-of-town guests, and taking these musical risks to find an expression and gain a wider appreciation.
