Superior Power of Wisdom & The Destructive Nature of Foolishness

Seek wisdom above all things, and you will enjoy the result of your hard work and labor in life.

When I was in college at Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills Alberta, Canada, as first year students, we were mandated to read: “The Disciplined Life,” by Richard Tailor. In that book, there was an extremely talented doctor who began to drink, and from that delved into more destructive tendencies which finally took his license and destroyed him. I never forgot that. That story touched my life in a profound way.

We were also asked to memorize Proverbs 8 in the Scriptures. In that chapter, God was calling foolish humans to come to Him and have wisdom.

“Doth not wisdom cry? And understanding put forth her voice. She standeth in the top of the high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. Unto you, O men I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, and be ye of understanding heart.”
Pro. 8:1-4

Down the years in my own private life, I have deeply realized the grave necessity of possessing wisdom. I have made terrible mistakes because of lack of wisdom, and many have ruined their lives because of this crucial trait in human life.

1 What is wisdom?

The Greek word for wisdom is Sophia, and Hebrew Chokmah-experience, shrewdness, the knowledge and the ability to make the right choices at the opportune time; the consistency of making the right choice is the indication of maturity and development. (The New Strong Concise Concordance-Vines Concise dictionary of the Bible).

Wisdom also means the following in the dictionary:

Sagacity, discernment, sound judgement, clear thinking, understanding, intelligence, judiciousness, judgement, shrewdness, intellectually, etc.

2 What does the Scriptures say about wisdom?

Wisdom is linked to God. The Scripture says:

“The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Wisdom is to hate evil, pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth do I hate.” Pro. 8:13

3 Crucial nature of wisdom in life:

God tells humanity seek wisdom first: God says:

“ For wisdom is greater than rubies, and the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Pro. 8: 11

What are rubies? They are the representation of the material things we seek in life, the money we pursue all our days on earth: gold, diamond, precious stones, etc. God who created humans warns them wisdom is greater than these things, but humans spend all their days on earth desperately and ruthlessly pursuing money, power, and uncurbed ambition that associates it. Many have reached the highest pinnacle of fame, only to tumble and crash- completely ruined and destroyed. We know many stories of people like that.

Men & Women who have fallen in history because of lack of wisdom:

• The story of Macbeth by Shakespeare never ceases to amaze me. One of the rising nobles of his time. His cousin Duncan king of Scotland will come to visit him. Macbeth and his wife plotted and killed him for envy to usurp the throne. Immediately he was assassinated, Macbeth said:

“Macbeth has murdered sleep.”

From that day on, Macbeth could not sleep anymore. His wife became mentally deranged and would reveal the bloody deed they performed. This will finally destroy their lives.

• Saul was the first king of Israel. God lifted him up from his poor disposition, made him king and exalted him. He will not listen to God’s instruction. Again and again, his self- will, and arrogance came first to God’s instruction. Eventually, he lost the kingdom to King David because of his disobedience.

• Kings and great persons in the Scriptures, politicians, ministers of God, corporate leaders, ordinary people have fallen and were destroyed by lack of wisdom. It involves disobedience to God’s will: sexual immorality, stealing, uncurbed ambition, envy, love for political power, etc. All of these things have led to lack of wisdom. Some have risen to the highest pinnacle of fame and crashed and forgotten. In our daily lives, we have made mistakes that lingered on in our lives, or destroyed everything we labored in life.

4 What does wisdom involve?

• It is to listen to God’s instruction and receive His word: that gives wisdom and an understanding heart.
• Your mouth should speak nothing but the truth, not wickedness and lies.
*** Watch what you say: the Scripture says the power of life and death lies in the tongue.'
• Hate evil and ungodliness- that makes you wise.
• Wisdom is the pathway of prudence, knowledge, inventions and creativity.
• It is to be humble, not proud or arrogant.
• It is the path way of God’s inheritance.
• It is to keep God’s ways.
• “They are blessed who heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.” (Pro. 8).

5 Why hesitate? seek wisdom with all your heart:

Daily, we hear famous people who fell from grace and destroyed; our world is riddled by fear, turmoil and chaos because of lack of wisdom in leadership: whether it is political, spiritual, corporate or individual. We are almost at the brink of Third World Nuclear War unless God in His mighty grace and great compassion intervenes.

Why do we hesitate to seek wisdom desperately? It will curb instantly these turmoil, killings, hate, division, race problems, immorality, wars, inequality, joblessness, ravaging our nation and the world. God will restore peace and love back to us if we seek the path way of wisdom. May God give us the grace to listen and obey Him. That is wisdom desperately needed today.

Wisdom dwells in God's bosom
Wisdom abodes in God's domain
God calls humans to wear
The robe of wisdom
And guard it around them
Foolish humans
Refuse to listen
Leave us alone
They cry
We know it all
Leave us alone
They know it all
They have sailed the skies
They are satisfied
They have conquered the world
They have conquered every aspect of the world
They stumble without wisdom
They crumble without God's laws
They crash without peace
They fumble without understanding
They consume without discretion
They consume without inner illumination
Where is wisdom?
They cry
They scramble for wisdom
They pay handsome rubies
But it is too late
They lose everything
Wisdom dwells in God's bosom
Wisdom abodes in God's domain
Don't ignore wisdom along the way
You can't prosper without wisdom
Along the way
Your opulence
Riches and fame
Intellectual acumen
Political savvy
Fade without wisdom
Evaporate without wisdom
