They'll Be Rolling on the Floor Laughing at ROFLcon II

They'll be rolling on the floor laughing this weekend as ROFLcon II takes place at MIT. ROFLcon is a conference devoted to Internet culture and celebrity and is billed by its organizers as possibly the "most important gathering of humanity since the fall of the tower of Babel."

The focus of the conference is internet memes, those little catch phrases, web sites, or chain letters that spread quickly across the Internet, making their creators and or subjects famous, at least on the Internet.
Academics, internet celebrities and humorists will be among the guests, including:

  • dana boyd, a social media researcher at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center (NERD) in Kendall Square, and Harvard's Berkman Center
  • Laurence Canter, co-creator of the first massive commercial spam
  • Kevan Atteberry, Creator of Clippy, the Microsoft Office animated assistant
  • The program for the weekend includes panels on "The Future of the World Weird Web", "The Good, The Bad, and The Awkward" and "i can haz dream?: race and the internet", a performance by the MemeFactory, and a pre-release screening of "The Winnebago Man" about the titular Angriest Man in the World.

ROFLcon is sold out, but many of the events are being streamed live at Go there now before the conference starts streaming and understand what it means to be Rick Roll'd.

Update: In honor of ROFLcon, you can have The Internet in a cone @ Toscannini's. Vanilla, with Nerds mixed in. Relax. It's a candy. No Soylent Green here.

I hope that someday, somehow, I can be THIS nerdy. Probably not, but a girl can dream, can't she?
