We have been keeping you apprised of the bills in Congress that threaten local franchising (the means by which CCTV receives its funding), network neutrality (allowing telecom corporations to limit bandwidth for its competitors) and support redlining (allowing telecom providers to pick and choose which neighborhoods they will serve).

One such bill, the Communications Opportunity, Promotions and Enhancement Act of 2006 (COPE) is making it’s way from the Telecommunications subcommittee of the House into the Commerce Committee TOMORROW. We are asking that you sign one of the internet petitions RIGHT NOW to help us try to stop this bill from getting any further.

The issue of network neutrality has the potential of changing the open nature of the internet. For example, in April, Time Warner’s AOL blocked all emails that mentioned www.dearaol.com — an advocacy campaign opposing the company’s pay-to-send e-mail scheme. Even Google is concerned, as a telecom corporation could provide faster speed to a competitive search engine.
