Joseph Lowery Delivers Keynote for Cambridge NAACP

The Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, cofounder and President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and a close colleague of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered the keynote address at the 21st Annual Cambridge NAACP MLK breakfast on February 4, 2006.

In his speech, recorded by Cambridge Community Television, Lowery spoke about national priorities and identity, questioning the attention given to “weapons of mass distraction,” such as fear of terrorism, rather than about the increase in poverty and loss of civil rights. Declaring his non-partisanship, and displaying a sharp sense of humor, Lowery explained that one party "takes us for granted and the other party just takes." Lowery also spoke about the recent passing of Coretta Scott King. Click here to view a sample of Lowery's address.
