Live Below the LIne Day 2

How much is enough... THE FOUNDRY...

Eating on $1.50 per day.

Day one. I had to attend the city council yesterday... yes I did, the Foundry building, 3rd street and roger was on the agenda. The city manager request $40,000 for a report on the building 'usability' by end of May, it was approved. That's lots of cash. The salary of 1 employee for a full year, for 1 month of work. Can it really be, who's doing this study, why is it so expensive...?

During the citizens comment, I heard a couple of real big absurdities which I would like to highlight:
1. We need more start ups in East Cambridge.
Whomever thinks this is completely nuts or has some interest (is going to make money, lots of it). There are so many startup in Kendal Square East Cambridge, the only one profiteering are the incubators and landlords. Start ups find their funding in a limited circle of mostly local angels and vcs or relations of the business members, family members, college pals... Pilling up start ups in one area is not a good idea, it suffocates capital funding... they are limited resources and too many people competing for these resource, which becomes one more worry a start up shouldn't have. Kendal Square was great for start up 5 years ago... now it has passed... and they won't be back, so don't try to make us believe we're at the beginning of something new... We're at the end... Big pharma and tech company (Microsoft, Google) have invaded the area, leaving no room for anyone else, straining the resources and transforming the area in an office park rather than a center of innovation... the recklessness of the city in a desperate attempt to cash in is outrageous. But than again who am I to argue...

2. I got insulted by the following...
"I love east cambridge, I love the fact I live 2 blocks away from so many smart and innovative people,.." So you're next door neighbors are idiots? I think that's what the city councillors think, actually I'm pretty sure... Otherwise I just can't explain their mad drive to pile on ... more construction, more money, never enough...

3. The Foundry could bring $100,000 a month in revenue, which would be an immense help to city fund.
That is right, the city councilors approved a salary for the new city manager Rich Rossi of $330,000 / year. The president of the United States makes $400,000 / year, the vice president $225,000 /year. Running the city of Cambridge really deserve $330,000 a year... is that why we need to make so much more money... who is really benefitting here. Really unbelievable. I guess once they have sold or rented the Foundry the city councillors will vote to increase their salaries... and to make themselves feel good apportion the little that is left to the children of the city.

Hunger makes me angry... Real angry, what kind of democracy is this... Councilor feeding the fat cats, then relieving their conscience providing low income housing... is that a compromise we can live with? REALLY... REALLY...

Did you know city councilors who serve 10 years receive full health care coverage for the rest of their lives, their salary $70,000 / year and some...And what do they do, I don't dare spelling it out... The most amazing is that they keep getting re elected...

Oh yes the proportional election... where councilor decide who they will give their extra vote too...in effect trumping the system. And giving them crazy power, very mafia like... Last election or the one before can't remember Marjorie Decker was late filling for the election of city council, she was trying to move up the political ladder and run for state senate... she didn't get the bigger job... and had to run as a write in candidate... the best part ... she didn't get enough vote but was help by her fellow councilor... I wish I had it that easy... Decker is a family which has been on the council for more than one generation... I see an ism...

It's about time Cantabridgian did something about this... a return to democracy would be nice, with fair election, a real mayor ... and so much more...

One of the most amazing thing of all, we are known as the People's Republic of Cambridge, when people go up to talk at the city council, their never heard... when a business go up to talk, their message is always received loud and clear...

And to close... if you don't believe me try it out... and check who pays for these distinguish city councilors campaign...

The foundry should be an art center, a housing for all these fantastic local non profit which have nowhere to live and give so much to children, their parents and our community.
Art is more important than money, much more. This one beautiful building we fought so hard to get, next to this beautiful green space, it deserve to house our dreams and aspirations, our creativity, it should be the soul of our neighborhood, a part of the soul of our city.

Cantabridgian take your city back! Or they'll sell it to whomever will pay...

PS: The Foundry has taken ownership of the building in January 2012 and the building has remained unoccupied since then. I was told the monthly maintenance cost was around $10,000 / month... that is $180,000 have been spent on an empty building, can this be tolerated??
