Help, Make A Difference

Yesterday I went shopping, it was quite an eye opener, and not for the reasons I expected. Before I tell you, here is the list of item I wanted to purchase, I already have my week’s menu all prepped up:

Lentil, rice, potatoes, eggs, pasta, onion, salt, beans and if I had enough cash, canned tomatoes, herbs, garlic and some vegetable.
I thought it was going to be a challenge to get all this food... I didn’t think $7.50 would cut it, was going to be a real tough week. To start I went to 3 stores to compare... Shaw, Whole Foods and Market Basket, where I usually go.

This is not advertising but I just can’t help myself... Big props to Market Basket... Boo Shaw & Whole Foods. As it turns out Market Basket not only was I able to get what I wanted but more... I was stunned... Whole Foods and Shaw would only allow me to buy 2/3 of the items. Here is the list of all I bought for the week.

1 lb of lentil ($0.99), 1 lb of rice($0.75), 1 lb of pasta ($0.79), 1 lb of flour ($0.66), 2 eggs ($0.50), salt ($0.06), 2 cans of beans ($1.34), 2 cans of tomatoes ($1.32), 1 onion ($0.79), a cauliflower ($0.99), 1 oz of thyme ($0.07), 1oz of rosemary ($0.07) for a total of $7.39, I’m under a budget and have 2 meals a day, pretty good ones too. I might decide to substitute flour for a lemon.

Now, this is not what I expected, really... I’m extremely surprise you can get so much for so little... To make the calculus easy, if I spend $2/day for 365 days, it totals to $730, time 6 billion people on earth... Would cost $4.25 trillions a year to feed the planet... The world GDP for 2011, $69.98 Trillions. 6% of world GDP to feed the planet... And I didn’t take into account government discount :)

People are startving.
