Want to spend a year of your life doing something that will make a difference? Consider becoming an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Cambridge Community Television! CCTV is the public access television, cable radio, and computer multimedia center serving the extraordinary city of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Already voted best in the nation five times, CCTV has high ambitions and we're seeking a talented staffer to join our team.

CCTV seeks an energetic, ambitious, creative individual who is excited about the opportunity to do community service for one year in the AmeriCorps VISTA program. We're looking for someone who thrives on the challenge of managing projects from the big picture down to the smallest details, loves organizing systems, and would love to work in a diverse, ever-changing environment committed to providing access to the media for everyone.

The Alternative Technologies position was created to help us answer some questions: What is the best way for us to move digital media within our facility? How can we develop a dedicated peercasting system to be managed by CCTV for our users? How can we stream live events related to community technology, the public access movement or the media reform movement on CCTV's website?

The position requires proficiency in HTML, Filemaker Pro or other database software, web scripting languages, such as PHP or Perl, familiarity with standard network protocols, such as FTP and HTTP, and knowledge of common operating systems, particularly Mac OSX. Programming experience in Java or C/C++ is helpful. Applicant should be personable, friendly and excited about working in a dynamic and diverse urban community center. Prior experience in community television, radio, or computer labs helpful, as is knowledge of the media reform movement. Applicants of color, women, and bilingual individuals are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Massachusetts State law, CCTV does not discriminate on the basis of color, race, religious creed, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, ancestry or handicapped status.

The AmeriCorp VISTA Program provides the following benefits:

  • Training and Professional Development
  • Living Allowance ($9,600 yearly, after taxes)
  • Choice of education award upon completion of service ($4,725) or stipend ($1,200)
  • Basic health insurance
  • Relocation Allowance (airfare and up to $500 for relocation to host site)
  • Life Insurance (VISTA pays approx $5.00 per month for a $15,000 death benefit)
  • Childcare, if eligible
