More than half the world’s energy supply is consumed in cities. Advanced urbanism offers new paradigms for increased efficiency through mixed-use buildings, hybrid densities, smart infrastructure, and innovative transportation systems, but transforming today’s cities will require a massive coordination of efforts reliant on existing resources while driving a global transition towards reliance on sustainable resources. Defining a vision for a new urban energy future poses an equal challenge for designers, planners, policy makers and engineers to develop the forms, technologies and metrics that will help to realize it. Produced by MIT.
