On World Food Day, a local take: Explore favorite Cambridge restaurants and learn about local food-related issues

Sunday October 16 is World Food Day

Weekend programming on Channel 9 will be dedicated to food issues – from discussions of food security, GMOs and allergies, to episodes exploring favorite restaurants in the city. Tune in 6-9pm Friday Oct. 14, noon-midnight Saturday Oct. 15, and 12-4pm Sunday Oct. 16:

Friday at 6pm, the program starts with the Cambridge Bites series, visiting Emma's Pizza, Baraka Cafe, Greek Corner, and more.

Video profiles of other current Cambridge favorites to follow, such as Bartley's and Armando's - as well as places from an earlier time, such as Central Square's The Golden Donut.

Then, at 8pm, The Snacking Hour - a talk show dedicated to snacks.

Saturday afternoon starting at 12pm, the Food For Thought lecture series: In Let's Talk About Genetically Modified Foods, a conversation with Consumer Reports experts about the ethics and safety of genetically engineered food(s). And in Lets Talk about Food Allergies, a lecture by Dr. Wayne Shreffler, Chief of Pediatric Allergy & Immunology at Mass General Hospital and Director of the Food Allergy Center, discussing various issues surrounding food allergies.

Sunday at 1pm CCTV's Cambridge Uncovered series hosts a discussing on Food Justice: Moderator Joan Squeri of Healthy Communities Capital Consulting sits down with Veronica Barron of Food for Free, Alanna Mallon from the Cambridge Weekend Backpack Program and Vice Mayor Marc McGovern who chaired the city's Income Insecurity Commission, to talk about what’s being done – and what needs to be done – to lessen the problem of food matters facing many Cambridge families.

And, from NeighborMedia reporter Kristina Kehrer, meet some folks who work behind the Cambridge culinary scenes: JJ Gonson, owner of the “locavore” catering company Cuisine En Locale and event hall ONCE Somerville - Friday at 8:45pm, Saturday at 9:30pm, and Sunday at 12pm - and, Tyler Wintringham and Dan Thorn, two baristas at 1369 Coffeehouse, Sunday 12:15-12:45pm.
