Walking the Walk: Cambridge Blindness Organization's Annual Fundraiser Empowers Its Members

Walk the walk (or donate to) Cambridge Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind - annual fundraiser September 30, 2018, Fresh Pond.

Sunday, September 30, 2018 - 9:00am to 1:00pm

Read the brochure for the Cambridge Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) annual Walkathon (to be held Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 9am - 1 pm at Fresh Pond Reservoir) and you will have an awakening.

You will be comforted. You will be given a seed of knowing that, were you to become blind, you would go on, and you can flourish:

"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Blindness is not what holds us back. We can live the life we want."

The Cambridge Chapter of the NFB sponsors their walkathon every year to benefit its worthy chapter activities. In addition to funding college scholarships for student members, another goal for the fundraiser is getting newer members to the week-long annual NFB national convention. Why is it so important for blind folks to attend this convention? Well, imagine being or becoming a member of the most stigmatized and feared disabled classification, and wondering how you are going to make it going forward. Now, by contrast, imagine being that same you, and mixing for a whole week with thousands of independent, empowered blind people white-cane-tapping and guide-dog-using their way around a huge hotel, sharing meals, learning new skills, finding out about up-and-coming technology. THAT'S what this NFB Chapter does with much of the money raised in their annual fundraiser: It strengthens, educates, eases, empowers, and - honestly - normalizes being blind. Yes, it makes blindness a normal thing.

So catch the wave of awesome awareness! Join the walkathon, having collected some of your own pledges (pledge form here), or donate directly to the NFB Cambridge Chapter here...and sip up some of that knowing that is so vitally important, or would be so vitally important to you or others you know who might become blind.
