Commemorative Program for World AIDS Day (Dec.1)
November 30, 2008 - 5:31pm — ElisaCCTV will present a specially produced commemorative video piece by local artist London Bridgez in honor of World AIDS Day (Dec.1). London's spoken word piece " Can’t Stop (Loving You)" pushes our expectations of the genre, building creative bridges between blues and soul. Her work mimics afro Caribbean oral traditions of story telling about love, life, and loss.
CCTV will be commemorating World AIDS Day by darkening our local cable Channel 10 and displaying a continuous scroll of names of Cambridge community members lost to HIV/AIDS along with this programming.
World AIDS Day will be recognized around the globe on December 1st with events that highlight progress, raise awareness, and remind us of how much work still needs to be done.

Philosophy for Free: L'Université Populaire at Cambridge
November 26, 2008 - 9:28pm — sselIn its beginnings Philosophy was a "public affair": Socrates and his disciples chose the main square -the most crowded place in the polis- as the ideal stage to discuss the nature of truth and justice.
For those first philosophers the challenge of "thinking" was also something that should be enjoyed in the company of friends (without renouncing arguments and disagreements).
Both elements are in the origin of l'Université Populaire of Caen - an initiative begun in France by the philosopher Michel Onfray which sought to establish a non-academic forum, an informal one, for debating and spreading new ideas.
Its success was replicated in other "universities" in different French cities like Lyon o Avignon. In 2007, the idea also caught on in Boston, where a group of French expat residents of Cambridge began the local chapter of this center of "intellectual resistance". read more...

Any Interest in an Audio Podcasting Course?
November 25, 2008 - 11:05am — ColinI've been teaching the Blogging 101 and Videoblogging Production courses here at CCTV during the past year. I'm thinking about dropping the Blogging 101 course in favor of proposing an Audio Podcasting course for our training program.
Would anyone be interested in taking the course is we offered it?
I am going to work on a syllabus over the next few weeks. If you're interested in taking the course, and if there's anything you would interested in learning more about, please leave a comment below.
Thanks!

Crank up the Radio
November 21, 2008 - 5:14pm — jpmjrThrough my work with the creation of a new project for ComputerCENTRAL, I have gotten a valuable experience of the rewards obtained from putting in the legwork. The first part of this process consisted mostly of just doing research about what we already do in the computer lab and what we aren't yet but could be doing. Some of this work was a bit tedious, with a lot of checking and rechecking websites. With moments where I felt like I was roaming around the Internet in circles I experienced some doubt about whether or not I was going to be successful. But when I finally stumbled on the idea of using the ComputerCENTRAL facilities to expand the radio program, it was something I was able to get immediately excited about. Once that happened the ideas and enthusiasm has just started rolling along. Now that I look back, that time of research was crucial in making things as successful as they are now. read more...

Combining Work and Play
November 14, 2008 - 6:24pm — jpmjrPart of the reason that I enjoy working with media is that it seems like there is always something new to learn. More and more lately I have been learning about different components of the station and various areas of media. I feel like this is really helping me to get more excited about the things that I am working on. I am seeing connections between the work I am doing and the various elements of media that we use here and that exist beyond our means. Experimenting with my own radio show has given me ideas and perspective about how we can improve what we do with radio here at CCTV. Taking a class about web design and dreamweaver has helped me to gain some knowledge base about our own website and how it functions. Using a flip camera to make a movie for myself has given me the experience necessary to help Digital Divide participants to learn about and use the cameras for themselves. I am lucky enough to have two very different passions that come together in places like CCTV. read more...
