Have Bike, Will Travel: Cambridge Mayor Pedals for Walk-Ride Day

Mayor Denise Simmons rides again

Despite the c-c-c-cold yesterday morning, Cambridge's own Mayor Denise Simmons (left) and her aid, Rosaleah Brown (right), went g-g-g-green! In honor of February's Walk-Ride Day, the two City officials pedaled to the Harvard Square Business Association's annual breakfast.

Mayor Simmons was chauffeured on the back of a bicycle-built-for-two by Green Streets Initiative founder and organizer, Janie Katz-Christy.

Walk-Ride days, sponsored by Cambridge-based Green Streets Initiative, are always the last Friday of every month and encourage people to, yes… to walk, ride, carpool, bus, T, or use some other mode of transport than their own personal car.

For every mile you don't drive you save one pound of carbon dioxide (CO2) and for every gallon of gasoline you don’t use, you keep 20 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere! read more...

You've heard of Black Monday... well this is Green Friday

Remember THIS FRIDAY, November 30th, is Walk/Ride Day!

Always the last Friday of every month -- Wear green, go green, be green...feel good about yourself!

Walk/Ride days are about challenging yourself to find alternate forms of transport other than your gas-powered fume-emitting car...walk, bus, train, bike, or carpool...(yes, it's a car, but at least you're sharing it...)...but I wouldn't give these unicycles a try unless you're a pro!

Local businesses here in Cambridge (including EMS, Herrells Ice Cream, Full Moon, Porter Square Books, Tag’s Hardware, and others) are celebrating Green Streets' Walk/Ride days by offering people who wear and go green on Walk/Ride days -- rewards including

  • discounts
  • prizes
  • raffles

and more!

International School of Boston Goes Green

ISB's Green lunch kit

Green is a popular color in Cambridge schools these days. The International School of Boston (actually in Cambridge) has officially approved a Sustainability Initiative to reduce its environmental impact on the earth.

“First of all, we’re calculating our Carbon Footprint,” says Shannon Bloemker, the ISB parent leading the school’s Sustainability Initiative. “That’s how much carbon gas our activities produce. NSTAR is doing a baseline energy audit so we can see what we’re using now, and then we can measure the impact of our efforts to reduce our gas and electricity usage as our program continues.”

The program’s goals are to conserve natural resources, reduce pollution and waste, and provide a healthy toxic-free environment.

“Recycling is great, but reducing and reusing are better,” says Shannon. “Our goal is to reduce waste throughout the school. For example, we’re reducing cafeteria waste through our green lunch program.” read more...
