The Joy of SOCKS

Sock it to the Mayor's Office -- Sock Drive for the Homeless

Winter is a tough time for the homeless, but for hundreds of homeless men and women, walking the cold wet streets of Cambridge this winter will be a little better thanks to Mayor Simmons who is spearheading the collection of socks for the homeless.

Even for those who enter day or evening programs or shelters, their socks are still cold and wet, which makes it hard to warm up, and can lead to serious health issues. Social service agencies face a perennial struggle to obtain enough clean, warm socks to provide to the homeless.

This winter, the Cambridge Public Health Department is teaming up with Mayor E. Denise Simmons in an effort to collect new winter socks for the shelters and agencies that work with the homeless population. From now through the spring, adult winter socks can be dropped at donation boxes located at the following locations (Please donate socks in their original packaging, if possible):

Sock Drop Box Locations

  • The Mayor’s Office, Cambridge City Hall, 2nd Floor
  • The Cambridge Public Health Department, 119 Windsor Street
  • Boston Sports Club, Central Square
  • Cambridge City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway

Less glamorous donations like this are often overlooked and underestimated, but socks are one of the homeless' greatest needs.
