11/6: My survey

This morning, before I knew about Matt's treatment, I went down to the store itself to get some ideas for imagery and to see if there were people around to interview.

I was talking to Mr. Soilis, the man who runs Felix, the dry-cleaning/shoe repair store that's in the basement of the same building where Ferranti-Dege is located. He'd be willing to be interviewed about the store, but for personal reasons he doesn't want to be part of the project if it's going to show Harvard Real Estate in any kind of unfavorable light.

Then, Mr. Soilis kind of took me by surprise when he called Tony Ferranti himself (who was actually in the building, moving stuff) to talk to me. So I met him and he's willing to be interviewed, but he's really busy with the closing and after this Wednesday he's not going to be available for a couple of weeks. But things could change, so I left him my number in case he can find some time for us after next class, just so we can have some time to prepare.

While I was looking at the store I thought it might be good if we could actually get inside, just to get some good views of what the store looks like now, maybe to contrast with old photos of what the store might have looked like when it was doing business. Also, there's a "Going Out Of Business" sign that I think would make a good image somewhere in the documentary. But we can't get a clear picture of it because it's behind security bars. If we could get inside the store, or get someone to raise the security bars, so that we could take a clean picture of it...

I should have asked Tony this when I talked to him, but I admit that I was so surprised to talk to him right away that I forgot to ask. And I don't have any contact information for him, but he has my number. If he calls me back, I'll ask him, is that OK?

sounds like good news to me, the universe is co-conspiering with us. :D

Something that I wasn't clear about: Tony Ferranti himself suggested this Wednesday (11/8) for an interview, but I didn't think that would work out if we have no time to meet or prepare questions.

Maybe he can make time for us later, I'll know if he calls me back. Also, he lives in Arlington and it seemed like he wouldn't mind if we interviewed him at his home.
