Free Screening: Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People
Film Real presents a FREE screening of the Media Education Foundation film Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People. This documentary exposes a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters -- the long line of degrading images of people of Arab descent. From Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists," this film provides insight into the origin of these stereotypes, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today. Wednesday, July 28, 7pm, at the Cambridge Community Center, 5 Callender Street. This film will also be screened on CCTV's channels in August, dates TBA. Visit www.filmreal.org for details about the screening.
