This picture was not chosen to be in the show, but another one of mine was. I found out about this contest by being on the email list of Union Square Main Streets. Main Streets is sort of a funky, arty Chamber of Commerce. They sponsor and publicize all kinds of cool stuff in their neighborhood. I like Cambridge, but I think they have more fun in Somerville. The Contest and show are being sponsored by East Somerville Main Streets.
I was excited to participate in this event. I have wanted to photograph the Cross Street railroad bridge for years and never got around to it. I went out on a perfect day and had a great time exploring the tracks leading out of North Point in Cambridge, Route 28, industrial, commercial and residential areas that I hadn't really looked at in years. I did get some nice shots of the bridge, but they chose someone else's for the show. I hope it's good.
The next time you get a chance to drive or walk down Broadway between the McGrath Highway and Sullivan Square, take your time and get a good look. There's a vitality there that is very nice. A person live well by shopping along there. Maybe not very high on the hog, but you would eat well from Brazilian, Salvadoran, Mexican, and North American stores and restaurants. I could be very happy there.
The opening is Thursday Nov. 20, at Somerville City Hall 93 Highland Ave. and you are invited! The show will run through sometime in January 2009.
