2010 Cambridge Peace and Justice Awards: Peacemaking in a Time of Hope and Change
The Cambridge Peace Commission will hold the 12th Cambridge Peace and Justice Awards -- honoring an amazing set of individuals and groups for their contributions to peacemaking in our city -- on Sunday, May 23, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the West Cambridge Youth Center, 680 Huron Ave., Cambridge.
Individual Awards:
* Rawhl Adams: Cambridge High School Extension Program
* Sarav Chidambaram: Cambridge GLBT Commission
* Principal Tim Groves: King Open School
* Leigh Hardy: Cambridge/El Salvador Sister City Project
* Judy King: Nonviolent Peaceforce and WAND
* Arpi Kouzouian: Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Greater Boston
Group Awards:
* Cambridge Cares About AIDS
* Area IV for Peace: Toni Brooks, Cameron Edey, Officer Sil Ferreira, Renae Gray, Sean Hope, Mark Moses, James Pierre, Michele Scott, Nancy Seymour, Annie Small, Roz Springer, Minka vanBeuzekom, Lieutenant Dan Wagner; Area IV Youth Center, Cambridge Boys and Girls Club, Community Art Center, Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.
If You Want Peace In addition to the presentation of the awards to the recipients, the event includes an address by José Edgardo Alemán Molina, Consul General of El Salvador in New England, and live music performed by Haitian singer, songwriter, and musician Gifrants – who has been called one of the most innovative and prolific Haitian musicians of our time – and by the World Jazz Ensemble of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.
Since 1995, the Cambridge Peace Commission has honored individuals and groups in Cambridge who have worked for peace and justice. Out of more than 50 nominations received this year, the Peace Commission selected ten individuals and four groups representing the breadth and depth of efforts for peace and justice in our city – from the local to the global – in families, schools, congregations, and neighborhoods.
To help defray the costs of the event, the suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
