Trouble in Alewife Red-tail Paradise??
Alewife Red-tail update, 5/12/10:
A surveillance camera was installed by Vast Capital Management recently to keep a watchful eye on the Red-tail’s nest at 185 Alewife Brook Parkway (7th floor). Though it is not clear exactly how the camera that is hooked up to a computer will be used, I was assured by the installer that Vast Capital’s President, Nick Atinizian, is taking an active interested in the wellbeing of our Red-tail friends. This may come just in time as there is great concern over the health and vigor of the youngest chick who seems to prefer hunkering down in a corner while the other two flap their wings and aggressively feed. Local birder guide and Red-tail hawk enthusiast for 30 years, Paul Roberts, known as PHAWK, says this is a great concern and is not feeling good about it’s viability. Perhaps the new camera will give us a closer perspective on this chick’s behavior.

Hi, yesterday around 6:35p, tue, June 1st, while at the stop light at 185 looked up to briefly view the nest, there was a soft rain and 2 women with binoculars were watching-light was dim . Did the recent downpour damage the nest ? or perhaps it was just the angle from where I was looking ?
Been following the saga and have spent quite a few hours on several afternoons joining the amazing group viewing the family. What a treat. Andy Provost has been exceptionally generous with sharing his telescope with children and others. A wonderful experience for all. Thank you all: Ernie Sarro, John Harrison, Andy and others for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.
How are the remaining chicks doing and their parents. Last time we were there, never saw the Mother ?
It must have been a heart stopping moment when Larry flew. How far did he fly and did he return at all to the nest ?
Has anyone read the book "Red-Tails in Love" ? Story of Pail Male. Just bought it at the recommendation of my bird lover bro-in-law.
Thanks again.

Larry flew today, for the first time, I believe.
Lucky is very healthy and fights hard for his fair share of food. But fledging will be difficult for all of them and we hope Lucky waits until it is developed more.
Though we gave them names, the sex is not certain. But based on shape and behavior, the biggest, Lucy, probably is a female while Larry, second biggest, and Lucky, the runt, seem to be males.
Can anyone tell me if the fledglings are male or females?

Lucky is getting bigger and stronger each day. We feel he's going to be fine.
Nice shots!
You'll have to introduce yourself to me some time. Here is a link to John Harrison's blog that tells how we got all the names for this Red-tail family.

Ahh, I was wondering where the camera came from! I've been taking pictures since a friend of mine first pointed it out this January: http://www.flickr.com/photos/eichin/tags/185alewifebrookparkway/
When I've got time I pull in and park in front of Circle Furniture; there are usually people across the street with *large* lenses too. A lot of passers-by will stop and ask about them, it'll be nice to tell people that they have names :-)
I shot some pics today here:

Many of us are following the story of Buzz and Ruby. I drive by every day to and from work, and love that the camera is giving us all a better view of happenings! Here's hoping that the littlest chick is going to make it.
