OPENING THE GREAT VISTA OF TREMONT STREET and THE RESTORATION OF THE NATURAL SLOPE with TREE PLACES
OPENING UP THE GREAT VISTA OF TREMONT STREET:
This shows the view out to the great vista of Cambridge/Tremont Street from the space in front of Boston City Hall. This view is obstructed by the present "pyramid" style head-house . . . by removing it the great vista of Tremont Street is opened. Access to the Green and Blue MBTA Lines are relocated in clearly marked entrances in the proposed vertical transportation and exhibition building on Cambridge Street.
RESTORATION OF THE NATURAL SLOPE: This drawing shows the transformation from the present plaza steps into a gentle slope. Hence, restoring the natural feeling original sites original topography. The present steps are obstacles to snow removal, the handrails clutter the plaza surface, one often experiences the frustration of "going up just to go down' and the "leveled" plaza surfaces between the steps are do not drain well of leaving large puddle. This proposed sloped surface innovation solves all of the aforementioned problems. TREE PLACES: The Site Plan drawing shows Tree Places placed along the upper ridge of the sloped surface. The Tree Place innovation creates: (1) a very clear definition of the lines of pedestrian movement that ring the plaza, (2) resting places along those lines of movement, (3) protection from the wind and the comfort of shade in the summer and indoor sunlight penetration in the winter (4) a sense lateral enclosure to the plaza outdoor space (5) a convex shaped space as opposed to the present amorphous concave shape of the present outdoor space and (5) a clear counter curve to the concentric curves of Cambridge Street and Congress Streets.
