WiFi in the South End

Earlier this week, Gabriel Fishman treated fellow VISTAs to a rooftop tour of the open-mesh WiFi network at the Castle Square Tenants' Organization.

I thought this project might be of interest to the Digital Divide group. The CSTO also offers refurbished computers and computer training to its residents. (I believe MIT is the current parent of this project.)

Though the technology was a bit over my head, the views were cool -- and we just missed the rainstorm as you can tell from the looming clouds!

Thanks for the views, Julie.

One of the guys who works at Castle Square is Emilio Flores (son of Mina Reddy, but he has a claim to fame in his own right!). He was a VISTA there - I ran in to him on Sunday and we talked about our issues with the "kiosk kids" - the kids who come in after school to use the computers, but refuse any structured program and end up disrupting the other stuff going on...he didn't have any easy solutions, but since it seems like a common issue, there might be some collaborative problem-solving we could do...
