Squaring of the Square?

I knew more BIG change, and BIG business was coming to Central Square. The sign for me occurred a few years ago when the benches (where the harmlessly-dangerous drinkers used to chill) were taken away (Y'all miss ‘em too huh!!!). Then Manhattans, my urban gear store, departed only to be replaced by a bank.

Now Footlocker may leave & Porta Classica will surely be gone by January 2008.

Questions do remain and shall be answered: Is the small business owner leaving “C-Square” due to (dare I say it) rising rents? Will every business there soon represent the 90 degree rigidity of chain stores? Or is there a silent war being waged over young urban clothing - farfetched you say BUT – the three above mentioned business ALL cater to urbanites (Hip-Hop RULES the WORLD – oops I digress…)

Alas I wrote a poetic ditty to express…what my eyes did digest…

Stroll thru C-Square
whaddya see
big money banks
staring back at thee

Chain stores on the right
small biz owners over left
one bus stop on the edge
gotcha runnin’, losin’ ya breath

Are rents goin’ up?
for lease signs all around
layaway for toys and clothes?
HA, jump on the Red, down to BeanTown

Sit in the ButterFly
muse about the biz slump
warm (chill outside) wait
CONSTRUCTION, grab the asthma pump

Stoll thru C-Square
what should you see
ask the people – where they at?
GONE, can’t afford the fee…

I agree with you, Sister Bee, it is of great concern (let's not bemoan the loss of Footlocker, necessarily - they ARE a chain, too!) that maybe the small businesses cannot afford the rent in Central Square anymore. I think what is healthy is to have mixed use - they say the chains are "anchors" that ensure that there is enough traffic for the smaller stores to also make enough to hang on....but we sure wouldn't want the intimate, small town character of Central Square to go away...
