The Mirant Corporation has been trying to ignore an agreement to build a boardwalk along the Broad Canal in Kendall Square. This canal runs along Mirant's Kendall generating plant. Mirant agreed to build this boardwalk in order to receive a variance to install a larger power generator. The City of Cambridge also gave Mirant a temporary occupancy permit seven years ago. This temporary permit needs to be reviewed! ALL RESIDENTS OF CAMBRIDGE ARE URGED TO ATTEND THE BZA MEETING ON NOVEMBER 8th! PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR GETTING THIS CORPORATION TO STAND BY THEIR AGREEMENTS!
-This has been an ongoing issue that the East Cambridge Planning Team has been involved in.
-Mirant has claimed post 9/11 security issues as the deterrent for having a boardwalk. Former Mirant engineers have dismissed these claims.
-I was invited to visit this plant in November of 2006. I went to meet with staff who wanted to discuss the importance of security at the plant. I was able to walk through the main entrance of the plant and explore parts of the plant without question. I never saw any security or got the sense anyone at this plant had security on their mind. I was later given a tour of the plant and none of the entries along the canal were locked or being monitored.
-Mirant has a history of disregard for the citizens of Cambridge and the environment.
-The Conservation Law Foundation was involved in a long legal battle with Mirant over illegal water dischares in the Charles River. Mirant has been ordered to comply with guidelines.
-Mirant has also claimed financial burdens, but their financial reports have been very positive. Mirant has realized huge profit increases over 2006.
November 8th at BZA!
