Fire at Mormon Church in Cambridge - Update
A three-alarm fire ripped through the Mormon church on Brattle Street in Cambridge on Sunday morning. The fire spread quickly, destroying the building.
According to witness reports, the church’s fire alarm system sounded during morning service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located on Longfellow Park. Worshippers quickly evacuated the church. A firefighter on the scene said that to his knowledge no one was injured.
Thick smoke filled the air as firefighters battled the blaze.
Fire crews from Cambridge and Somerville responded to the emergency.
The cause of the fire is not known, although there was speculation that it was an electrical fire. Firefighters on the scene said that it was not believed to be suspicious, but that there would be an investigation.
The several blocks of Brattle Street and other surrounding streets were closed.
By 1 p.m., firefighters said the fire had been put out, but crews continued to douse the church to prevent any sparks from reigniting the blaze.
The damage to the church was obvious from the street. Much of the roof was missing, windows were broken and the steeple and much of the exterior were clearly damaged.
More photos and video to come.
