See video

On July 31 and again on August 21, 2010, Buzz returns to the old nest at 185 Alewife Brook Parkway and does some fixing up. This early nesting activity is thought to be very unusual. This Red-tail family has been teaching us new things all Spring and Summer.

Red-tailed Parents, Buzz & Ruby, Provide "Flight School" for Fledglings

See video

The Red-tails of Alewife's three nestlings, Lucy, Larry, and Lucky, have all fledged under very difficult conditions seven floors up on the side of a building with very little room for error. Why were they successful? Look no farther than their hard working and intelligent parents, Buzz & Ruby, whose consistant prompting amounted to teaching in its purest form. This video gives examples of how they accompished this.

"Empty Nest" Syndrome for Buzz & Ruby as Lucky then Lucy Fly!!! (video updated 06/08/10)

*** Note to fellow hawk watchers: Please use the comment area on this blog to update what the Alewife Red-tail family is doing. Please start with the date and time of your last spotting and your name; Thanks!

Lucky, the little runt who everyone was worried about, took to the sky before the eldest, Lucy. On June 6, 2010 at 12:50 PM, Lucky was leaping high and with a gust of wind to help him, flew over the short wall above the nest. He was doing fine until after the rain when he got in a bit of a pickle (video to follow on this blog entry).

But just in: "Lucy's in the Sky". Sometime before 5:30 AM on June 7, Lucy left the nest. No one was there to witness the event but at 5:40 AM, Jane arrived to find an empty nest. Lucy was spotted getting food from one of her parents. Details to follow.

Come to Belmont Town Hall at 8 PM Tonight! (June 7) "Save Alewife Resources"

Monday, June 7, 2010 at 8:00 PM at Belmont Town Hall

Ellen Mass, President of the Friends of Alewife Reservation, has been a big fan of the Buzz & Ruby saga. But these Red-tails, along with all the plants and animals in that area, are in serious jeopardy. A huge developer has won a very expensive and drawn out legal battle with the local towns and is ready to bulldoze a very unique and strategic forest in Belmont bordering Cambridge and Arlington. This will have devastating ecological effects on the whole Alewife area. We need your presence and strong voices at a town meeting in Belmont Town Hall this Monday, June 7th at 8:15 PM. Do it for Buzz, Ruby, Lucy, Larry, and Lucky and all the life around the Alewife Reservation.

Read this Globe article for details:

Larry Reaches Pinnacle then Flops to Street but Rises Again (June 2 Update w more photos & PHAWK's Report)

Latest update as of 4 PM June 2: Added 3 photos to Picasa album from this morning. At 4 PM Larry was spotted by Andy Provost's "Big Canon" relaxing at top left corner of 185's roof after being fed by Buzz & Ruby earlier. Read PHAWK's (Paul Roberts)very informative summary of today's events below.

May 31: Larry reaches top of 185 roof at 4 PM after fledging at 6:10 AM. Later around 5:30 PM, Larry crashes into the side of the building trying to swoop up to the nest and flutters into the busy street! Hildy ran out and stopped the traffic then her and John aided by a blanket guided Larry off the road. June 1: Larry was doing fine and once again hit the side of the building trying to get onto the roof. Hildy once again guided him off the road. He was last seen at 7:30 PM on top of Trader Joes. This event was covered by Robin Young of NPR's WBUR 90.9. See link to Robin's Here 7 Now report from June 1 below. More to come on this entry later. Check back. Photos at my Picasa site: read more...
