Flu Clinic: Jan. 9th, 2010

On January 9th, the Cambridge Public Health Department partnered with the city to offer a free flu clinic, administering both H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines to residents and employees in Cambridge.
Two more free clinics have been scheduled for January 20th and 27th.

Police unions negotiate ... on which unions are legit

A bill that was hotly debated last week at the State House would alter the roster on the state's Joint Labor Management Committee (JLMC), which manages labor disputes between police/fire unions and cities.

Cambridge police support the bill. They don't boast membership in a nationally recognized union (like, say, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers), but are represented by the the Massachusetts Municipal Police Officers Coalition (MMPC), a loosely confederated group of independent local unions. read more...

Counting the Ballots on Election Night

Elections officials worked until midnight counting ballots from today's City Council and School Committee elections. Many of the 20 candidates vying for nine council positions were in the room, waiting for the unofficial numbers to be announced.

Majorie Decker's sticker campaign (she missed the filing deadline, so her name wasn't on the ballot) is the first major write-in campaign since the city's computerized its ballots. The abundance of so-called "auxiliary ballots" (which have write-ins or stickers) which could not be read by scanners created a challenge for election officials. Back in September, the Board of Election Commissioners voted on whether or not to have a specific plan for dealing with the auxiliaries, but reached a 2-to-2 stalemate. Ethridge A.
