SUMMER BIRD WALK

Sunday, July 6
7:30 to 9:30 am
Neville Place Driveway, 650 Concord Avenue

In the summertime, early morning is the best time to look for birds. They are most active when the air is cool and they are hungry. Adults may be feeding babies, and fledglings will be following their parents and chirping for food. Beginning birders are welcome. Binoculars can be provided if you need them.

AN EVENING WALK IN THE UPPER CAMBRIDGE WATERSHED

Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, will lead a tour of the land known as the Harrington Estate that is part of the upper Cambridge Watershed. This beautiful property has streams, ponds, woodland trails, and remnants of an old mill. Carpool will depart from the Water Department parking lot promptly at 6:10. Registration is required!

WILDFLOWER IDENTIFICATION with NEWCOMB’S WILDFLOWER GUIDE

Wondering about the flowers at Fresh Pond? This guided tour will identify some beautiful specimens in the nearby Water Department bio-swale. You can borrow a Newcomb’s guides (and lenses), or bring your own.

INTRODUCTION TO KINGSLEY PARK BIOSWALE

Created as a biological filter for rainwater running off of the Kingsley Park hillside, this bioswale at the base of the sledding hill has become a complex and interesting plant and animal community. Last year, the Friends group “adopted” the area to help maintain it as an educational resource. Come and learn about the plants, animals, and efforts to control invasive species.

WATER PURIFICATION FACILITY TOUR

Where does our Cambridge drinking water come from, and how it is purified and piped throughout the City? Tim MacDonald, Manager of Water Operations for the Cambridge Water Department, will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. Future Monday Evening Tour dates: Aug 18, Sept 15, Oct 20, Nov 17.

NORTHEAST SECTOR WALKABOUT

Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, will lead a tour of Fresh Pond Reservation’s Northeast Sector, the beautiful new conservation and recreation areas that were recently opened for public use. Future Monday Evening Walkabout dates: Aug 25, Sept 22.
