FERN IDENTIFICATION AND DRAWING WORKSHOP

An interesting way to learn to identify ferns -- draw them! Using fern keys and maps, identify seven fern species growing near the Water Deptartment building, and share drawings and observations. Pencils and drawing paper will be provided. Bring a camp stool or lawn chair. Please register.

Bring a lawn chair and sit at the site of the famous Fresh Pond Hotel (Kingsley Park hillside) where visitors once lounged watching sailboats and swimmers using the Pond while Ranger Jean as she tells tales of Fresh Pond during its days of private ownership in the 1800’s. This program is offered in cooperation with the Historic Cambridge Collaborative as part of Cambridge Discovery Days (ww.cambridgema.gov/historic/walks.html. No dogs please. SURVEY OF AQUATIC PLANTS AT BLACK’S NOOK

Join this yearly survey of the aquatic plants of Black’s Nook! Use nets and buckets to collect plants, and a dichotomous key to identify them. The balance between native and exotic/invasive plants in a pond is indicative of the health of that environment. Registration is required.

Where does our Cambridge drinking water come from, and how it is purified and piped throughout the City? Tim MacDonald, Manager of Water Operations for the Cambridge Water Department, will describe the process, answer your questions, and give a tour of the building. NORTHEAST SECTOR WALKABOUT

Chip Norton, Cambridge Watershed Manager, will lead a tour of Fresh Pond Reservation’s Northeast Sector, the beautiful new conservation and recreation areas that were recently opened for public use. He also will use maps and diagrams to help illustrate the goals for this major restoration project. One more Monday Evening Walkabout in 2008: September 22.
